About 30 minutes up the coast from the marinas and nightlife of Cabo San Lucas sits its quieter, artsier sister town: San Jose del Cabo. Where Cabo San Lucas is loud and lively, San Jose is slow and soulful, a colonial town of cobblestone streets, art galleries, a landmark mission church and a farm-to-table food scene that draws travelers from across Los Cabos. If you want culture, calm and great food, this is where you spend a day (or three).
The Thursday Art Walk and Gallery District
San Jose del Cabo's signature experience is the Art Walk, held on Thursday evenings during the high season (roughly November through June). The town's Gallery District, the streets around Alvaro Obregon and Morelos in the historic center, fills with open galleries, local artists, live music and wine. It is free, relaxed and easily the best way to feel the town's creative pulse. Even outside Art Walk hours, the Gallery District is worth a slow wander any day of the week.
The historic center and mission church
The heart of San Jose is its plaza, Plaza Mijares, anchored by the Iglesia San Jose, a mission church whose origins trace back to the 1730s. The tiled facade and its scene depicting a piece of local mission history make it the town's most photographed landmark. Around the plaza you will find shaded benches, colorful colonial buildings, boutiques and cafes, an ideal spot to sip a coffee and watch town life go by at an unhurried pace.
The San Jose estuary and birdwatching
Where the arroyo meets the sea sits the San Jose Estuary (Estero San Jose), a freshwater lagoon and protected wetland that is one of the region's most important bird habitats. More than 200 bird species have been recorded here, making it a favorite for birdwatchers and anyone wanting a quiet nature walk. Palm-lined paths trace the water, and early morning is the best time to spot herons, egrets and migratory species. It is a peaceful contrast to the desert landscape that surrounds most of Los Cabos.
The farm-to-table scene
San Jose del Cabo has become the culinary center of Los Cabos, and its farm-to-table movement is the reason. Just inland, in the fertile foothills near the town of Las Animas and the greater San Jose valley, you will find celebrated open-air farm restaurants such as those in the Flora Farms area, where much of what lands on the plate is grown or raised on site. Reservations are essential at the marquee spots. Across Los Cabos you will find the same quality at partner tables like Metate, Maria Corona, The Kitchen and Italian favorite Caprese. Back in town, the Gallery District and Plaza Mijares are dotted with excellent restaurants, taquerias and mezcal bars.
- Wander the Gallery District, ideally on a Thursday for the Art Walk
- Visit Plaza Mijares and the historic mission church
- Walk the San Jose Estuary for birdwatching at sunrise
- Book a farm-to-table dinner in the Flora Farms area or valley
- Relax on the town's quieter beaches
Quieter beaches
San Jose's beaches are calmer and less crowded than the busy sands of Cabo San Lucas. The long stretch fronting the Hotel Zone is beautiful for sunrise walks and sunbathing, though open-Pacific currents mean much of it is not safe for swimming, watch for beach-condition flags. For a swimmable, family-friendly option, sheltered coves along the Tourist Corridor between the two towns offer calm water, and it is an easy launch point for on-water fun like a crystal SUP paddle, an electric beach bike ride, or a luxury sail. Either way, the vibe here is barefoot and unhurried, exactly what San Jose does best.
How San Jose fits into a Los Cabos trip
You do not have to choose between the two towns. Los Cabos is really a pair of destinations connected by a 20-mile corridor: energetic Cabo San Lucas on one end, tranquil San Jose del Cabo on the other, with resorts, beaches and golf in between. Many travelers base in one and day-trip to the other. Spend your days exploring galleries and estuaries in San Jose, and your nights out on the marina in Cabo San Lucas, or vice versa.
